Veränderungen der Gesellschaft durch demografische Entwicklungen oder Wertewandel beeinflussen den Status und die Zukunft des DSV nachhaltig. So stehen wir vor vielfältigen Herausforderungen wie zum Beispiel der Sicherung finanzieller und materieller Grundlagen des Schwimmsports oder der Erarbeitung neuer Angebote im Breiten-, Freizeit- und Gesundheitssport für Menschen jeden Alters.
Das Leitbild des DSV will deshalb Darstellung und Zielsetzung zugleich sein, will werben für den attraktiven Verband der Gegenwart und zugleich Raum schaffen, neue Entwicklungen durch innovative und kreative Ideen in Gang zu setzen und zukunftsorientiert zu handeln.
In ihm definieren wir uns als modernen und erfolgsorientierten Sportverband, der die Interessen seiner Mitglieder vertritt und ein wichtiger Bestandteil des deutschen Sports ist.
Denn sportliche Höchstleistungen sind unser Ziel und verpflichten gleichzeitig zu professioneller Förderung. Auch wenn Schwimmen zu einer der Grundfertigkeiten der Menschen zählt, ist es keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Die rund 2.300 Vereine des DSV schaffen hierfür die Voraussetzung – gemeinsam mit Partnern und anderen Angeboten für Anfänger. Maßgeblich hierfür ist wiederum die bedarfs- und zukunftsorientierte Qualifikation von Ausbilderinnen und Ausbildern, die ebenso zu unseren zentralen Zielen zählt.
Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass junge Menschen in ihrer Erziehung und Entwicklung vom Schwimmsport auf allen Ebenen – insbesondere im Verein – profitieren. In der täglichen Arbeit unserer Verbände und Vereine vermitteln wir Jugendlichen Teamwork, Toleranz, Verantwortung und Fair Play. Der Ehrenkodex für Trainer, detaillierte Wettkampfbestimmungen, Kampfgerichte und vor allem die Verhinderung und Ahndung von Doping ergänzen unsere Maxime »Fair geht vor«.

The mission statement of the DSV therefore wants to be a representation and an objective at the same time. It wants to promote the attractive association of the present and at the same time create space to initiate new developments through innovative and creative ideas and act in a future-oriented manner.
In it we define ourselves as a modern and success-oriented sports federation, which represents the interests of its members and is an important component of the German sport.
After all, top sporting achievements are our goal and at the same time commit to professional support. Even if swimming is one of the basic skills of the people, it is not self-evident. The approximately 2,300 DSV associations create the conditions for this - together with partners and other offers for beginners. Decisive for this is once again the demand- and future-oriented qualification of trainers, which is also one of our central goals.
We are convinced that young people benefit in their education and development from swimming at all levels - especially in clubs. In the daily work of our associations and clubs, we teach young people teamwork, tolerance, responsibility and fair play. The code of honor for coaches, detailed competition regulations, courts of justice and above all the prevention and punishment of doping complete our maxim "fair acts".
