Drinking plenty of water can be a useful tool in a dieter's arsenal when weight loss is a goal. It helps boost your metabolism, suppresses your appetite and helps you lose weight. Getting in the recommended 8-10 glasses a day can be difficult, but with determination, you'll soon be on the right track of using water to your weight loss advantage.
The weight of water refers to the extra water that is stored all over your body - in the fingers, face, legs and even toes; however, water weight is temporary and should not be confused with long-term chronic water retention (which may be due to illness or medication and should be treated by a physician). You may notice the difference on the scale after a salty meal, a few days after the excess, if you are dehydrated or just before a menstrual cycle. [Hanging on these few extra pounds can make you feel bloated, lethargic and a little uncomfortable - especially if your pants feel a little tight. Whether you have a big event to come, feel abnormally swollen, or just want to drop a few pounds, losing weight is a temporary way to feel better in a short time. If you make a few simple changes to your diet and lifestyle, you can see your weight go down as well as reduce bloating.
Water retention is the response of an organism to a change in hormones, environment or disease. It is not uncommon to experience excess fluid in your body, causing bloating and weight gain. While severe water retention can lead to sore limbs and stiffness, many people first notice an increase in weight. Unless caused by an underlying disease, this "water weight" can be controlled by diet, exercise, and preventative habits.
