The Mantra:

Triyambhakam Mantra:
Om tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam
urvārukamiva bandhanānmṛtyormukṣīya mā'mṛtāt
Shivaya Mantra:
Om Namah Shivaay
Origin:
It is also called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Lord Shiva; the Tryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva's three eyes. Its Devata is Rudra or Lord Shiva in his fiercest and most destructive roop or aspect.
Rishi Markandeya was the only one in the world who knew this mantra. The Moon was once in trouble, cursed by King Daksha. Rishi Markandeya gave the Mahamritryunjaya Mantra to Sati, Daksha's daughter, for the Moon.
Significance:
It is scientifically proven the benefits of meditation and chanting of these shiv mantras on concentration ability and focusing ability. It is also chanted while smearing Vibhuti over various parts of the Body and utilized in Japa or Homa (havan) to get desired results.
The chanting of this Maha Mritunjaya Mantra 108 times and Om Namah Shivaay is called one Mala. However It is said that chanting or hearing of these Mantra 1,25,000 or more (One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand) times within 40 days with full belief and devotion gives the good result.
Om Namah Shivaya is the great, powerful and effective mantra for God Shiva. Benefits of chanting Om namah shivaya is so incredible that will change the way of your living. It is for God Shiva who is the great, who know everything, who is omnipresent. Om namah shivay mantra gives incredible power and effect if you chanted or hear 108 times.
Meaning:
Tryambakam: The three eyed lord (Shiva) who sees what we can see but who also sees what we can not see. Hence 3 eyed.
Yajamahe: Yajanam is invocation; I invoke
Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanama: Increase my good vasanas (not of material aspects like gold, money, sex, anger, the 6 enemies etc.)
Urvarukam iva bandhanaan mrityor mukshiyam amritaat: (my soul is) like a cucumber bound (to the body), please free me from the captivity of death and give me immortality.
Namah Shivaya means "adoration (namas) to Lord Shiva", preceded by the devotional syllable "Om". The syllable "Ya" at the end of the mantra denotes an offering. Thus the mantra Om Namah Shivaya actually means "I offer to Shiva a respectful invocation of His Name", and not merely "I respectfully invoke His Name".
