रामायण और महाभारत जैसे धार्मिक धारावाहिकों ने तो सफलता के तमाम कीर्तिमान ध्वस्त कर दिए थे, 1986 में शुरु हुए रामायण और इसके बाद शुरु हुए महाभारत के प्रसारण के दौरान रविवार को सुबह देश भर की सड़कों पर कर्फ्यू जैसा सन्नाटा पसर जाता था और लोग अपने महत्वपूर्ण कार्यक्रमों से लेकर अपनी यात्रा तक इस समय पर नहीं करते थे। रामायण की लोकप्रियता का आलम तो ये था कि लोग अपने घरों को साफ-सुथरा करके अगरबत्ती और दीपक जलाकर रामायण का इंतजार करते थे और एपिसोड के खत्म होने पर बकायदा प्रसाद बाँटी जाती थी।
