Description of FOCOS Org

The Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) is a non-profit 501 c(3) organization launched in the United States in 1998. Our mission is to provide access to high quality, affordable, and specialized orthopedic care to those, primarily in Ghana and the broader African region, who would not otherwise have access to such treatment.
FOCOS was founded under the visionary leadership of Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, who is one of the world’s prominent specialists in treating spinal deformities. As native of Ghana, West Africa, Dr. Boachie-Adjei began FOCOS by sponsoring several medical mission trips each year to West Africa, Ghana in particular, to serve the medical needs of patients. With the support of more than 250 international volunteers and through coordination with local hospitals, FOCOS was able to help provide free evaluations and perform hundreds of complex spinal surgeries on adult and pediatric patients.
It quickly became apparent that FOCOS needed a home of its own to keep up with the health needs of the population, while providing the best of care. Dr. Boachie-Adjei realized a sustainable solution was needed and set out to deliver lower cost, high-quality orthopedic care to underserved patients throughout the world.
In 2005, FOCOS helped fund the purchase of the Watson House, which was converted into a medical clinic. The goal was to provide access to out-patient care, including pre and post-operative surgical evaluations. FOCOS was able to help obtain modern equipment and began programs to train local medical professionals. While the Watson House was a wonderful home for the FOCOS team, it was merely the early stages for a greater vision, and in 2008, FOCOS embarked on helping to develop a world-class hospital facility dedicated to orthopedic care.
Through relentless efforts and the generous contributions from major private donors around the world, FOCOS helped to fund the building and opening of FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in 2012, serving not only the local community, but patients from across the globe. The hospital features two operating theaters, a recovery room, a physiotherapy center, orthotics lab, radiology and MRI center, and more. It is the only facility of its kind in all of West Africa and is a critical part of the healthcare infrastructure in the region. Patients have access to treatment for a full range of spinal and joint deformities that would otherwise go untreated. With the support of dedicated staff at FOCOS Hospital, volunteers, generous donors and partners, we are transforming the lives of patients and helping them to STAND TALL! We are helping to save lives, one patient at a time.
