The Myth of Throwing Coins in Water
It is very common practice in India throw coins in the river, especially in religious places without a second thought. The real meaning behind this simple act has mostly been forgotten. Some think throwing the coin brings Goddess of Wealth into their lives.
In ancient India, most civilizations flourished near rivers and were a significant source of fresh water. As the rivers were the only source of water at the time, having clean water was essential for survival. Most currencies used then were made of copper, an element required by human body to maintain health. Once thrown in the river, copper would slowly dissolve in the water and the person drinking it would have sufficient intake of the metal in their body for optimization of the metal. Copper also pulled down all the dirt in the river, allowing clean and fresh water to flow freely on top....
The Legend of Throwing Coins in the Trevi Fountain
As mentioned, there’s a long-standing tradition about throwing coins in the Trevi Fountain – spend a few minutes watching people at the fountain and you’ll see that this is the main reason many people stop by. The original legend says that if you throw a coin into the Trevi – with your back to the fountain, throwing the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder – that will ensure a return to Rome. Perhaps thanks in part to the film “Three Coins in the Fountain,” a newer story also routinely makes the rounds that says throwing one coin means a return to Rome, a second coin leads to a new romance, and a third coin leads to marriage.
As you already know, presenting gifts to gods is an ancient practice that was usually meant to appease angry gods, or to act as a payment for a request or prayer. In the case of fountains and wells, people would toss in a coin while sending up a prayer—an early version of making a wish.
Many early European tribes believed that such areas were a gift from the gods. The idea that drinkable water was sent from the heavens remained even as wells and fountains were built. Often, a small statue of a god could be found next to early wells and fountains, turning them into a type of shrine. One rather prolific well can be found in Northumberland, England, and was used to pray to the Celtic goddess of wells and springs, Coventina.
