Many countries in the world use a unique identity system for their every citizen that holds all the details pertaining to his/her identity. The Government of India too has constituted the “UIDAI” (Unique Identification Authority of India), with the Planning Commission as the nodal agency within the Government and later “Nandan Nilekani” was appointed as the chairperson of the “UIDAI” on 28th January 2009.
The Aadhaar number is a random, unique 12-digit figure issued to each Indian resident who successfully enrols for it. The uniqueness of which is guaranteed by demographic details as well as biometric identification. At the time of Aadhaar enrolment, the people must provide the following demographic information: name, gender, date of birth, parent’s/husband’s name, residential address through list drawn up by the “UIDAI” (i.e. Voter IDs, Ration Cards, Passports etc.). Along with this they are required to submit three biometric also such as facial photograph of the individual, all 10 fingerprints and both irises scan. These are stored in the UIDAI’s Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR). For the purpose of generating a unique number, the UIDAI does a one-on-n match, i.e. each new enrolee’s details are matched against each existing people in the CIDR who have been issued a unique number.
