Por Tierra Santa se denomina una pequeña franja de tierra situada en el Oriente Medio, que se extiende desde el Mediterráneo hasta el río Jordán y el Mar Muerto, y que hace frontera con Líbano, Siria, Jordania y Egipto. El territorio tiene una salida al Mar Rojo en el puerto de Eilat. Tiene una superficie de 28.000 km2 y la distancia máxima de norte a sur es de 250 km y de este a oeste de 150 km. Actualmente, el territorio está dividido entre el Estado de Israel (22.000 km2) y la Autoridad Nacional Palestina (6.000 km2), que en los mapas internacionales se denomina West Bank.
El adjetivo “santa”, se refiere a la importancia espiritual que esta tierra tiene para judíos, cristianos y musulmanes. Para los judíos ésta es la tierra prometida, la tierra a la que Dios guió a su pueblo por medio de Moisés. En ella, Israel ha forjado su carácter universal como el protagonista del misterio de la salvación: del pueblo de Israel había de nacer el Mesías, descendiente del rey David.
Para los musulmanes es la tierra desde la que Mahoma ascendió al cielo. Para los cristianos es, sobretodo, la tierra en la que tuvo lugar el misterio de la Encarnación: la Segunda Persona de la Trinidad asumió la naturaleza humana y se hizo hombre para redimir a la humanidad.
