Seleksi Bersama Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (SBMPTN) melalui ujian tertulis telah menunjukkan berbagai keunggulan dan manfaat, baik bagi kepentingan nasional, PTN, maupun peserta. Bagi peserta, manfaat seleksi bersama adalah lebih efisien, murah, dan fleksibel dengan adanya mekanisme lintas wilayah. SBMPTN ini dari tahun ke tahun selalu diperbaiki dan dikembangkan sesuai dengan perkembangan zaman dan kemajuan teknologi. Pada tahun 2016 mulai diperkenalkan juga SBMPTN dengan menggunakan Ujian Tulis Berbasis Komputer (UTBK).
SBMPTN merupakan seleksi penerimaan mahasiswa baru dengan menggunakan hasil UTBK saja atau hasil UTBK dan kriteria lain yang ditetapkan bersama oleh PTN. UTBK dapat diikuti oleh siswa lulusan tahun 2017, 2018, dan 2019 dari pendidikan menengah (SMA/MA/SMK) dan sederajat, serta lulusan Paket C tahun 2017, 2018, dan 2019. Pengelolaan dan pengolahan data untuk kepentingan seleksi jalur SBMPTN dilakukan oleh Lembaga Tes Masuk Perguruan Tinggi (LTMPT). LTMPT adalah satu-satunya lembaga penyelenggara tes perguruan tinggi terstandar di Indonesia.
SBMPTN merupakan seleksi yang dilakukan oleh PTN di lingkungan Kementerian Riset, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi (Kemristekdikti) dan Kementerian Agama secara bersama di bawah koordinasi LTMPT dengan seleksi berdasarkan hasil UTBK saja atau hasil UTBK dan kriteria lain yang ditetapkan bersama oleh PTN.
Kelompok program studi dan jumlah pilihan pada SBMPTN adalah sebagai berikut.
Program studi yang ada di PTN dibagi menjadi dua kelompok, yaitu kelompok Saintek dan kelompok Soshum.
Peserta dapat memilih program studi paling banyak dua program studi dengan ketentuan sebagai berikut:
Jika program studi yang dipilih semuanya dari kelompok Saintek, peserta mengikuti kelompok ujian Saintek.
Jika program studi yang dipilih semuanya dari kelompok Soshum, peserta mengikuti kelompok ujian Soshum.
Jika program studi yang dipilih dari kelompok Saintek dan kelompok Soshum, peserta mengikuti kelompok ujian Saintek dan juga kelompok ujian Soshum
Urutan dalam pemilihan program studi menyatakan prioritas pilihan.
Peserta SBMPTN dapat memilih program studi di PTN mana pun.

SBMPTN is a selection of admissions for new students by using UTBK results only or UTBK results and other criteria set jointly by PTN. UTBK can be attended by students graduating in 2017, 2018, and 2019 from secondary education (SMA / MA / SMK) and equivalent, and graduates of Package C in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
