Dear children, teenagers and young adults!
Calculating your BMI can show you, how your weight relates to the calculated “normal weight”. If you are worried that your weight may be too low or too high please talk to a grown up that you trust (e.g. your parents, a teacher or your family doctor or school nurse).
The body mass index (BMI) is calculated to show the ratio between body weight and body height. It has first been computed by a belgian mathematician ba the name of Adolphe Quetelet and is sometimes also called Quetelet index.
Children and teenagers (up to about 18 years) are still growing. Because of that, the BMI has to be judged differently than for adults. Therefore, to get an accurate result you also have to state your age. (If you are older than 19 please use the BMI calculator for adults --> Link to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.viennasys.bmi&hl=en).
Dear parents!
What is the BMI for children and teenagers?
The Body-Mass-Index (BMI) shows the correlation between body weight and body height. It can be used to see whether your child's weight is still within a healthy range. To get an optimal result you need to look at corresponding age group.
The BMI is the calculated as the ration of body weight in kilogram over the body height in meter squared. It has first been computed by a belgian mathematician ba the name of Quetelet and is sometimes also called Quetelet index.
After birth, the BMI goes up for the first eight to nine months, to then drop until it reaches a minimum at the age of four to five years (differences between boys and girls occur). After that, the BMI goes up continually. Between the ages of eleven to sixteen girls have a higher BMI than boys, after sixteen it becomes the opposite.
Thus, to judge the BMI correctly, age plays an important role along with sex.
A child is overweight with more than 1 standard deviation and obese with more than 2 standard deviation (analogous to the marks of a BMI of 25 or 30 in adults).
Obesity (or adiposity) is an abnormal increase in body fat. The incidence of obesity is continually rising, not only in adults but also in children and adolescents.
Please consult children doctor, pediatrician, physician or other healthcare professional if you are concerned that your child may have a BMI that is too low or too high.
