Como na maior parte dos MMORPGs existentes, você selecionará um personagem e enfrentará monstros (mobs) para ganhar experiência. O continente de MU é habitado por uma grande variedade de monstros[6], dos mais simples como aranhas e pequenos dragões, aos mais temidos como Selupan, Kundum e Medusa. Ainda assim, existem dúvidas a respeito de como o surgimento do comércio virtual possibilita uma melhor visão global das condições financeiras e administrativas exigidas. Cada tipo de monstro é único, possuindo diferentes "spawn points", e "drops" variados de itens.
O sistema de controle do personagem é conhecido como 'Point-and-Click', onde o jogador aponta para o ponto do mapa onde deseja que seu personagem ande e clica para ativar o deslocamento do mesmo. Existem muitos menus com teclas de atalho de acesso as informações dos personagem, assim como aos seus objetos, num inventário virtual organizado por quadros, onde ficam ícones que representam os objetos que o personagem possui. Existem teclas de atalho também para ativar as 'Skills' (poderes) dos personagens, que se localiza na parte inferior da tela, enumeradas de 1 a 0 (mesma sequência do teclado) que servem para trocar de magia ou tipo de ataque numa batalha contra os monstros ou nos duelos contra outros jogadores online
