Your mobile device may be monitoring your TV viewing habits without your knowledge. The app CatchBatTV is part of an empirical study conducted by the Institute of System Security at TU Braunschweig, Germany. The study explores cross-device tracking with inaudible sounds in TV audio. Regular mobile apps may track these sounds, such that you cannot notice that your TV viewing habits are monitored and linked to the identity of your device. Such tracking is a severe privacy invasion that allows to spy on the behavior of users without them noticing.
The app CatchBatTV can be used to record TV advertisements and upload the video and audio to our servers for analysis. This helps us to study the presence of ultrasonic sounds in TV audio and to develop effective countermeasures. We are particularly interested in recordings of TV commercials from India and the Philippines. So how can you help?
1) Please record one or multiple spots of Indian or Philippine TV commercials (The video length may be between 10 seconds and 5 minutes)
2) Upload the recordings to our server securely.
Our app does not store or transmit any private data of you. The video's upload is encrypted via https. Moreover, your recordings are used only for our study and will not be published or given to any third party. We work under the very strict German privacy law.
