Kenya Monitor app is a m-Media & News app. It is the to-go citizen journalism app for all local content. It brings together all favorite news in one place from different counties in Kenya. All content is presented in a fun and intuitive manner.
Getting reliable news stories about Kenya or about development issues has become a rarity. Any story that is covered is vague and has no follow-up. The Kenya Monitor app will seek to change this. All stories will focus on what is going on in the different locales. Anyone will get to play a role in telling the story of where they live.
According to Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) statistics, average weekly TV viewership and radio listenership for the period Jan-Mar 2014 stood at 654,500 and 4,465,500 respectively. Mobile phone subscribers stood at 31.8 million as of March 2014.
Based on the above stats, mobile phones are available in all regions of the country. It would therefore be better to use phones as a medium of sending and receiving news due to their widespread reach. Today’s news focuses on specific areas like Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Naivasha; where access to TVs and radios is the norm. There is less news coverage from counties like Turkana and Garissa as it happens. News from those regions is heard days later or not at all, creating a knowledge gap. Mobile phones, through Kenya Monitor, can change all this.
Kenya Monitor will provide Kenyans with a platform to tell their stories in what is known as citizen journalism. Kenyans from all walks of life will get to tell stories about where they live, how they want it to be told and at the time they think it should be told. All content will be gathered from the people themselves. Stories will be submitted through SMS enabling anyone with access to a phone to do so. One does not need a smart phone to send in or receive content.
Anyone can get to share and save their favorite news articles. The Kenya Monitor will avail stories of what’s going on as it happens. Be in the know with the Kenya monitor!
Minimum SDK is now 2.2 .With this change, many more devices are now supported.
Unregistered users can read articles but can sign in/register from the drawer menu to post content.This was necessary because the news published is for the general public, and therefore login or registration before reading was not necessary.The Content hosting server has also been changed to a much faster one. This means that news will load much faster than before.
