طبق تعریف سازمان بهداشت جهانی طب سنتی مجموعه‌ای است از دانسته‌ها، مهارت‌ها و اعمال که بر پایه نظریه‌ها، باورها و تجربه‌های بومی فرهنگ‌های مختلف است، خواه که قابل شرح باشد یا نباشد، که در بهداشت و نیز پیشگیری، تشخیص، بهبود و مداوای بیماری‌های جسمی و ذهنی مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرند.
طب سنتی در بسیاری نقاط جهان وجود دارد که از جمله مشهورترین انواع آن می‌توان به طب سنتی چین، گیاه‌درمانی و طب اخلاطی (بکار برده شده در طب سنتی ایرانی - علم مزاج‌شناسی)، شمن‌باوری و آیورودا (بکار برده شده در طب سنتی هندی) اشاره کرد.
در دنیا ۷۵۰ هزار گونه گیاهان دارویی وجود دارد که ۱۰ درصد از این میزان خواص درمانی دارد. سازمان جهانی بهداشت طی ۳۰ سال گذشته‌استفاده از ظرفیت طب سنتی و مکمل را در کنار طب جدید در دستور کار خود قرار داده‌است، ریشه دار بودن در فرهنگ مردم، کل نگر بودن طب سنتی و سهولت دسترسی و ارزان‌تر بودن خدمات طب سنتی از دلایلی است که این سازمان در توسعه و ترویج طب سنتی مد نظر دارد.
مقصود ما از آنچه که امروزه در ایران به عنوان طب سنتی شناخته می‌شود آموزه‌هایی است که ریشهٔ آن را می‌توان در قرن سوم هجری و غالباً در ترجمه‌های عربی از آثار بقراط و جالینوس یافت.
