Slank kini adalah salah satu grup musik papan atas, yang bermula dari Cikini Stones Complex (CSC) pada 26 Desember 1983, yaitu grup musik yang terdiri dari anak-anak SMA Perguruan Cikini, Jakarta. CSC terdiri dari Bimo Setiawan (drum), Boy (gitar), Kiki (gitar), Abi (bass), Uti (vokal), dan Well Welly (vokal), yang banyak mengekspresikan kecintaan pada lagu-lagu Rolling Stones. Sayang, grup ini tidak bertahan dan membubarkan diri. Slank mengalami perubahan personel sampai 14 kali pada 1996 yang bertahan hingga sekarang. Formasi terakhir yang dimulai dari album ke-7 Slank, terdiri dari Bimbim (drum), Kaka (vokal), Ivanka (bass), Ridho (gitar), dan Abdee (gitar).

Sementara itu, lagu Gosip Jalanan dari album PLUR yang dirilis pada 2004 berbuah sorotan dari anggota Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat. Slank yang saat itu menjadi duta anti-korupsi untuk Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi dianggap melecehkan dewan melalui syair-syair lagu tersebut. DPR-RI melalui Lembaga Kehormatan Dewan berencana melancarkan tuntutan pada grup anak muda ini, meski kemudian rencana tersebut dibatalkan.
Rencana Slank untuk Go International mulai terlihat di pertengahan 2008. Dengan kolaborasi dengan The Big Hip, sebuah band asal Jepang, menghasilkan sebuah album, The Big Hip. Di album ini, Slank menggunakan tiga bahasa sekaligus : Indonesia, Jepang dan Inggris. Bagi para slanker, sebutan bagi penggemar, Slank bakal memberikan bonus berupa VCD Exclusive kegiatan Slank di Jepang bila pembelian kaset atau CD album terbaru Slank.
Selain itu band ini juga giat mendukung berbagai acara sosial. April 2010, Slank tampil pada acara Earth Live yang mengusung tema lingkungan. Slank menyerukan perlunya hemat dalam menggunakan sumber daya alam termasuk air.
