Walter Benjamin: philosopher, literary critic and translator. Born in Berlin in 1892. A Jew and left-wing writer who died in the northern Spanish border town of Portbou in September 1940, while fleeing National Socialism. Without the stamp authorising his exit from France Benjamin feared he would be handed over to the Nazis and so decided to take his own life. To remind us of his fate and that of countless, unknown refugees, the internationally renowned artist, Dani Karavan created a memorial to them in the Portbou cemetery in 1994.
The app takes you from Banyuls-sur-Mer in southern France to Portbou; the multimedia information points commemorate Walter Benjamin himself and the reasons for his flight.
Installation and Start:
After installing ➀ the app from Google-Store or from the website, ➁ download a tour from the context menu of the app, and then ➂ choose from the context menu. ➃ Perhaps also download maps/tiles so you can consult the map en route. Now you no longer need an internet or mobile network connection.
➔ En route no online connection is required, just GPS for navigational purposes. Texts, sound, pictures, videos and the map to help you find your way along the narrow tracks are on your SD card after downloading.
➔ Turn on the loudspeaker/headphones of your smartphone/tablet, to listen to the explanations.
