Contact sport is a sport in which body contact either is an integral component of the sport–eg, boxing, football, martial arts, rugby, wrestling, or commonly occurs while engaged in the sport–eg, basketball, hockey, lacrosse.
One area where a strength and conditioning coach can get very sport specific is metabolic conditioning or energy system training. Here, the coach can train the athlete to be conditioned not only specifically to his/her sport but also to his/her specific position, based on the specific energy systems used during the sporting event. Conditioning can be designed to train the muscle tissues and anaerobic or aerobic energy systems specifically for the time frame (shifts, play drives, etc) of the athlete's sport. A good strength coach will always have his team(s) fully prepared for their next season.
Another area where the performance enhancement program can be very sport specific is in the area of injury risk prevention. Statistics about the most prevalent injuries for a particular sport, position, gender, and age group can be used to specifically address areas that are most susceptible to injury in that sport. The strength and conditioning coach can then design effective programs for reducing the risk of athletes getting injured from non-contact related injuries.
A successful program needs to be designed with this balance and the goal in mind. A program that is too general will not properly prepare the athlete, and a program that is too specific (or attempts to be too specific) will also not properly prepare the athlete (an additionally runs the risk of overtraining certain movement patterns which increases the risk of injury). If you are not doing a balanced program, you need to re-evaluate what you are doing. If you need help, find a strength coach that believes in using balanced programs to achieve the best results.
A (full) contact sport is any sport for which significant physical impact force on players, either deliberate or incidental, is allowed for within the rules of the game.
Contact actions include tackling, blocking and a whole range of other moves that can differ substantially in their rules and degree of application.
Examples of contact sports are football (soccer), roller derby, lacrosse, rugby league, rugby union, American football, muggle quidditch, quidditch, water polo, kabaddi, hurling, handball, Australian rules football, ice hockey and wheelchair rugby.
Full-contact martial arts include wrestling, sumo, boxing, mixed martial arts, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, judo, various forms of full contact karate, and some forms of Taekwondo.
A semi-contact sport is typically a combat sport involving striking and containing physical contact between the combatants simulating full-power techniques. The techniques are restricted to limited power, and rendering the opponent unconscious is forbidden.
Some semi-contact sports use a point system to determine the winner and use extensive protective gear to protect the athletes from injury. Examples of semi-contact sports include karate, Kalaripayattu, kickboxing, various Chinese martial arts that incorporate contact rules sparring, and kendo.
Another indicator of a semi-contact martial arts competition system is that after a point is rewarded the adversaries will be separated and resume the match from safe distance, but often it is possible to argue if some martial arts sports belong in one contact group or another.
Limited-contact sports are sports for which the rules are specifically designed to prevent contact between players either intentionally or unintentionally. Contact can still happen, but penalties are often used to disallow substantial contact between players. These penalties, including physically removing players from the field of play, mean that contact is moderate or rare.
