THE HISTORY OF DEER HUNTING
No one can pin down and exact date for when humans began to hunt for deer; archaeologists have found remains of stone weapons and animal bones, including deer, in Germany, dating as far back as 350,000 years ago. Ancient cave paintings showing deer and hunters have been discovered across the world, with some of the oldest in Lascaux, France, dated 18,000 to 30,000 years ago. Much like the Native Americans we can assume that ancient hunters used every part of their kill not just the meat. Bones made tools, clubs, fish hooks, and other weapons, and hides were made into clothing, rugs, blankets, and other items useful in their harsh surroundings.
Since the Beginning of the Hunt
Look back at the times of the first settlers in the, now, United States of America, they didn’t walk around in camo carrying a pocket/bag full of shells, snacks, and the latest technology to help them find the hot spots. Technological advancement has seen to aid in the efficiency of the hunter, or has it? After reading countless articles on the evolution of hunting, beginning 4.4 million years ago to present time, one thing has definitely changed. The biggest change is why we hunt; while some still hunt to ensure that there is food on the table, many of us are out there for sport. Let us also think about other aspects of hunting that have changed, what about the use of stands, when did these come into play? Not only that but the evolution of the weapons used has most dramatically changed what is needed and how we hunt.
Evolution of Weapons
Bows, knives, slings ,spear, clubs turned into the first gun like contraption fired by the Chinese in 1232, then further more in 1364 the first recorded firearm was developed, which used wicks which needed to be lit in order for the gun to be fired. We can all imagine how stealthy or lucky you would need to get into range for a kill with a club, sling, etc… which was why one old widely technique of pack hunting is rarely seen today. With the evolution of the gun and increase in accuracy/rage of the bow, we no longer need to creep up on unsuspecting prey in order to get the kill shot. Modern weapons have both extended our range and created the opportunity for us to rely less on skills like tracking, stalking, and teamwork. Realistically since the invention of the Colt revolver in 1836, the sport of hunting has changed. As guns became more available and widespread in the 1700’s it enabled colonists to be able to hunt deer and other game that was widely available in the sparsely populated new lands.
Modern Deer Hunting
Keeping in mind that humans have hunted deer for at least 20,000 years, the tools and methods used have changed most rapidly within the last 700 years. Today we can be more accurate with telescopic sights and even a gun rest, meaning a deer that is not moving has little chance of making it out of there, pending any shooter error. If you are a fan of action movies, westerns, old school style outdoor movies, I am sure you have seen the hunter that sneaks up on the deer and still has no problem nailing it as it bounds away. This brings to mind a new revolution or should I say luxury we have. Our rifles/shotguns allows us a few misses with the ability to fire more rounds in succession with only the time it takes to squeeze the trigger between shots. As you can see with the advancement of men and technology the methods of how we hunt and the techniques have evolved.
